Search Engines for Country, Language, or Region-Specific Searches

Search Engine Colossus and Search Engine Guide are comprehensive global master directories of local search engines for regional, country, or language-specific searches. Yahoo! provides country-specific, regional, and official government site search options. Google offers a comprehensive Language Tools Page to search in specific languages or countries, translate text, change language interfaces, or link to country-specific Google sites. Glearch allows you to search for language and country-specific content in "top results from Google, Yahoo and Bing as well as the most popular search engines for the selected country."

• Centre for European Policy Studies-- From Brussels, one of Europe's leading think tanks, with the motto of "Thinking ahead for Europe." Excellent and numerous online publications, full-text and abstracts, and commentary index, largely on the European Union.

• Council for European Studies-- "The leading academic organization for the study of Europe... promotes and recognizes outstanding, multidisciplinary research in European Studies through a range of programs, including conferences, publications, and awards." Posts professional items and resources for European studies, including articles, working papers, newsletter, and links to the chief research centers for the study of Europe. • Council of European Social Science Data Archives-- "Promotes the acquisition, archiving and  distribution of electronic data for social science teaching and research in Europe...The CESSDA home pages allow easy access to the catalogues of member organisations and provide a central news forum about its activities and other relevant information."

• Eurointernet-- Excellent collection of information resources related to European integration on the Internet, including many full-text papers online. Serves as the World Wide Web Virtual Library for European Integration.

• Europages-- Searchable European business directory that provides over 1.5 million company addresses from over 35 European countries, key business information, links to yellow pages throughout Europe and to world business sites.

• European Archive-- "Digital library of [European] cultural artifacts in digital form. We provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public." Posts culturally significant documents, videos, audio, images of a wide variety.

• European Centre for Minority Issues-- NGO that "advances majority-minority relations in the wider Europe through action, research and documentation... supports the stabilization of areas of ethno-political tension and conflict, contributes to the strengthening of relevant legislation and best practices in governance, and enhances the capacity of civil society actors and governments to engage with one another in a constructive way." All reports, working papers, and issue briefs are available online in full-text. Note the Ethnopolitical Map of Europe and the Enriched Links Database.

• European Industrial Relations Observatory Online-- "Monitoring instrument offering news and analysis on European industrial relations. Its aim is to collect, analyse and disseminate high-quality and up-to-date information on key developments in industrial relations in Europe. It aims primarily to serve the needs of national and European level organisations of the social partners, governmental organisations and EU institutions."

• European Institute-- From the London School of Economics and Political Science, an outstanding "primary focus for the inter-disciplinary study of processes of integration and fragmentation within Europe." Posts many papers in its priority areas of research: governance of the European Union, European ideas and identities, and European political economy. The "Europe in Question" series explores "the future development and governance of Europe... new lines of reflection and analysis, and... research across cognate disciplines." Note the Research Resources on Europe page.

• European Political Science Network-- "Dedicated to the promotion of political science in Europe and to catering for the interests of individual political scientists, academic institutions and other bodies concerned with teaching and working in the discipline across Europe." Posts news, conference proceedings, and other publications.

• European Values Study-- "Large-scale, cross-national, and longitudinal survey research program on basic human values [in Europe], [carried on by] the European Values Study group...  aimed at exploring the moral and social values underlying European social and political institutions and governing conduct." Site posts surveys and results, newsletters, link to data, and more.

• European Yellow Pages-- "Intended as Europe's largest professional directory of businesses." Listings for Western and Eastern Europe, by country or city, plus country factsheets, events calendars, stock exchange results, and more.

• EuroStudies Gateway-- From Intute, a service created by a network of UK universities and partners, a fine searchable directory for access to high quality Internet resources about European studies in the social sciences.

• FORNET-- The European Foreign Policy Research Network, "the first formal attempt to structure and co-ordinate a network of researchers across Europe focusing on foreign policy governance... a forum for informed discussion and scholarly debate on all aspects of European foreign policy among academics and practitioners." Posts information on the work of FORNET and its members, newsletter, working papers, teaching guides, and more.

• Organization for Security and Co-operation  in Europe-- Many online publications and newsletters are available from this international organization, which is "the largest regional security organization in the world with 55 participating States from Europe, Central Asia and North America. It is active in early warning, conflict prevention, crisis management and post-conflict rehabilitation."

• Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies-- From the European University Institute, promotes research on the major issues confronting European society, principally the construction of Europe. Hundreds of excellent studies are available online. Note the EUI's database Historical Archives of the European Union, with some online access to the European Communities' files and "papers of European politicians or officials, or archives of European associations, parties and organisations that have played a significant part in the march towards European integration."

• Transatlantic Information Exchange System (TIESWeb)-- A joint European and American organization with a "Civil Society Agenda" to "strengthen the transatlantic partnership by promoting dialogue between individuals on a people-to-people level...not only to link citizens across the Atlantic but also to address key issues at the core of future EU/US relations." Promotes education and posts information and analysis on the topic.

• United Nations Economic Commission for Europe-- News, information, many statistics, and many online reports are available free in full-text from this United Nations regional organization. Great source for authoritative online economic information about Europe. Note the Statistical Database, with a wide range of data covering Europe, North America, and Central Asia.

• University Association for Contemporary European Studies-- Based in the UK, "one of the world’s premier European Studies associations [which] has brought together academics involved in researching and teaching on Europe with practitioners active in European affairs. It encourages the involvement of people from a variety of disciplines which have a European emphasis." Posts mainly UACES materials and maintains the Expert on Europe website, a database of experts on European matters.

• Western European Specialists Section of the U.S. Association of College and Research Libraries. This very useful site of library and information guides on European Studies "does not intend to replicate the excellent guides prepared in Europe, but to supplement them and make links among them from an international perspective."

• ZACAT-- "Social science data portal allowing you to search for, browse, analyse and download [European] social science survey data, provided by the GESIS department 'Data Archive and Data Analysis'...  Beside documentation on study level (e.g. abstract, related publications), all studies come along with documentation of full question and answer texts on variable level."
