It’s been a long semester, with classes, projects, Homecoming, club outings, sports events, field trips, late night studying, and so much more. Our students have taken all of their exams. Instructors are trying to finish up their grading so they can squeeze in some shopping before Christmas. (I’ve not quite finished the grading for my course, but I will be done soon). The campus at the end of the fall semester moves slowly to a quiet close, as we hold the last varsity basketball game before the break, the Fine and Performing Arts Department hosts the Christmas choral and orchestral concerts, High Library shortens its hours, and students begin the journey home for the holidays. Soon, the buildings around the Dell and Lake Placida will all be quiet. What remains from the academic term will be memories, many of which students will share for the rest of their lives. One cherished memory is the lighting of the Campus Christmas Tree, which Student Senate organizes as a ceremony before Thanksgiving Break. Together as a community, students sing carols, celebrate the holidays as Elizabethtown Borough Mayor Chuck Mummert and I throw the switch to turn on the lights, and listen to me read a classic Christmas story. I keep students in suspense each year about which story I’ll read. The Polar Express, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and T’was the Night Before Christmas have all been well received, as was this year’s The Nutcracker. Sheryl Cyphert, my executive assistant, helped out by ensuring I was guarded by toy soldiers and snowmen. My Santa’s hat is a precious hand-me-down from my predecessor, Ted Long. Our students may be quickly becoming adults, but they still enjoy fond memories of a child’s Christmas. I hope Blue Jays everywhere enjoy a blessed time this season, a wonderful 2018, and many good memories. Back to you soon in the New Year.

While many are caught up in the hustle and bustle of the fall semester coming to an end, the good memories of Elizabethtown College will remain cherished by many during this holiday season.

Enjoy the moment,
