ETOWN DEFEATS ALLENTOWN, 6-5, TO END SEASON WITH A WIN IN NCAA REGIONALS; CHRIS ROMIG BREAKS CAREER DOUBLES RECORD

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. --- The rains finally stopped Sunday, allowing play to begin at the 2000 NCAA Baseball Mid-Atlantic Regional for the first time since Thursday afternoon. Elizabethtown faced Allentown, which defeated the Blue Jays for the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship two weeks ago, and Etown avenged its loss at the MAC Championships by eliminating Allentown with a 6-5 come-from-behind win. With the win, Etown concludes its appearance in the tournament with a win and improves its record to 26-14 to end the season.

Making the victory sweeter for the Blue Jays was the fourth inning RBI double by senior third baseman Chris Romig (Beavertown, PA/West Snyder) which began the comeback. It was the 44th double of his career, breaking the former program record set in 1993.

By the top of the fourth inning, Allentown had built up a 3-0 lead. Etown got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Romig's historic double drove in Tim Downing (St. James, NY/Smithtown). The Blue Jays continued to chip away in the bottom of the fifth, as Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman), after stealing second and advancing to third on an error, was driven home on a single by Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty).

Allentown struck back with a run in the top of the sixth and another in the seventh to pull ahead 5-2. Etown made the score 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Price hit a two-out, two RBI double to send home Bonner and Jeff Peterson (Seaford, DE/Seaford).

The Blue Jays took the lead to stay in the bottom of the eighth when Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) doubled home Downing and Romig.

Derik Aasan (Cary, NC/Smithtown, NY) picked up his tenth win of the season in one and two thirds innings of relief, and Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his nation-leading 11th save.

ETOWN FALLS TO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY, 8-4, IN NCAA MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL OPENER

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N.J. --- Sixth-seeded Elizabethtown fell to the College of New Jersey, ranked fourth in the nation and first in the Mid-Atlantic Region, 8-4 in the opening game of the 2000 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional held at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University.

After a scoreless first inning, the College of New Jersey's bats came to life in the bottom of the second inning, tagging Etown starting pitcher Derik Aasan (Cary, NC/Smithtown, NY) for four runs.

Elizabethtown struck back in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs. After a scoreless fourth, TCNJ added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Elizabethtown scored two more in the top of the sixth to cut TCNJ's lead to 5-4. The College of New Jersey scored one run in each of its final three turns at bat to win 8-4.

Chris Romig (Beavertown, PA/West Snyder) batted two for four with one run scored and one RBI. Tim Downing (St. James, NY/Smithtown) hit one for three with one run, one RBI, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base, and Kevin Bonner (Pitman, NJ/Pitman) also scored a run and stole a base for Etown while going one for four at the plate. Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) drove in an Elizabethtown run while batting two for four.

With the loss, Etown's record now stands at 25-14 while the College of New Jersey improves to 31-6-1 overall.

Elizabethtown will play next in the double elimination tournament against the loser of today's game between Montclair State (seeded second) and Allentown (seeded fifth). The Blue Jays will try to fend off elimination at 11:00 a.m. Friday.

ETOWN SPLITS WITH ALLENTOWN, FINISHES MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS AS RUNNER-UP

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown finished the 2000 Middle Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship as the runner-up following a 9-8 win over Allentown and a 5-4 loss to Allentown Saturday in the double elimination tournament at Quakertown Memorial Park in Quakertown, PA. Elizabethtown is now 25-13 overall.

At the beginning of Saturday's games, Allentown needed to defeat Elizabethtown once in order to win the conference championship, while Elizabethtown needed to defeat Allentown twice in order to capture the MAC title. After falling behind 6-3 to Allentown in the fifth inning of the first game, the Blue Jays came back to score one run in the seventh, two runs in the eighth, and two more in the ninth to win 9-8 and force a second game.

Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) picked up a relief win in the first game and struck out five batters in four and two thirds innings of work. Chris Romig (Beavertown, PA/West Snyder) hit a solo home run for Etown in the fourth inning. The Blue Jays tied the game in the eighth inning when Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) doubled home Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East). Jeff Peterson (Seaford, DE/Seaford) drove home Turtell to put Elizabethtown ahead to stay.

Allentown jumped out to a 4-1 seventh inning lead in the second game. The Blue Jays again mounted a comeback, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Etown put runners on first and second with no one out, and Turtell singled, driving home Tim Downing (St. James, NY/Smithtown). Following a walk and a stolen base by Turtell, Mark Dixon (Havertown, PA/Delaware County Christian) singled to drive home Romig. Turtell later scored on an error by Allentown and was driven in by Joe Adams (Rockville Center, NY/Oceanside).

After a scoreless eighth inning, Allentown's Tony Damico hit a solo home run to put the Centaurs ahead 5-4, and Elizabethtown was held scoreless in the bottom of the ninth.

Both Elizabethtown and Allentown will return to action in the NCAA Regionals beginning May 17. The probable site of competition is Montclair, NJ, and the site is subject to change.

ETOWN DEFEATS SUSQUEHANNA, 10-6, BLASTS DELAWARE VALLEY, 17-5, TO STAY ALIVE IN MAC PLAYOFFS

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown eliminated Susquehanna from the Middle Atlantic Conference Playoffs in its first game Friday with a 10-6 win over the Crusaders and eliminated Delaware Valley with a 17-5 win in its second game at the Quakertown Memorial Park in Quakertown, PA.

Elizabethtown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Susquehanna as Tim Downing (St. James, NY/Smithtown) doubled home Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty). Chris Romig (Beavertown, PA/West Snyder) followed Downing's double with a two run home run, his seventh homer of the season, to center field.

Susquehanna struck back in the top of the third, taking advantage of a pair of Elizabethtown errors, a hit batter and four base hits to score six runs.

Elizabethtown immediately began chipping away at Susquehanna's lead, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and making the score 6-5. Downing drove in Price on another RBI double and was driven in on a single by Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst).

The Blue Jays tied the score in the bottom of the fourth when Romig drove in Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East) on a Susquehanna error. The Blue Jays went ahead to stay in the bottom of the sixth when Turtell drove in Comp on an RBI single.

With a 7-6 lead, Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) relieved starter Derik Aasan (Cary, NC/Smithtown, NY), who earned his ninth win of the season, in the top of the eighth. Pittinger shut down Susquehanna in the final two innings to earn his tenth save of the season.

The Blue Jays added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth, bringing the total to 10-6 as Jared Ness (McPherson, KS/McPherson) smacked a three run home run.

In their second game Friday, the Blue Jays avenged Wednesday's MAC Playoff opener loss to Delaware Valley by blasting the Aggies 17-5. Elizabethtown exploded for five runs in the fourth inning and eight runs in the eighth. Comp batted four for six with four RBI, two runs, two doubles and a triple. Kevin Bonner (Pittman, NJ/Pittman) hit three for four with two runs, three RBI, a double and a triple, and Price went two for six with four runs scored, two runs driven in and a triple.

Jamie Newton (Vineland NJ/Vineland) picked up his fourth win of the season, giving up only six hits in seven innings.

Elizabethtown faces Allentown at noon Saturday at Quakertown Memorial Park for the MAC Championship. Due to the double elimination structure of the tournament, Allentown needs to defeat Elizabethtown only once to win the championship, while Etown must defeat Allentown twice to win the MAC title.

ETOWN FALLS TO DELAWARE VALLEY IN OPENING GAME OF MAC PLAYOFFS, ROMIG TIES ETOWN CAREER DOUBLE RECORD

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Elizabethtown fell to visiting Delaware Valley Wednesday in the opening game of the Middle Atlantic Conference playoffs, 5-1. In the course of the game, Elizabethtown's Chris Romig (Beavertown, PA/West Snyder) hit the 43rd double of his collegiate career, tying the Etown program record.

Delaware Valley got on the scoreboard early, as Kyle Knouse (Arendtsville, PA/Biglerville) scored on an RBI grounder by Daron Swire (Bridgeport, PA/Upper Merion) in the top of the first inning.

By the fourth inning, Delaware Valley had taken a 4-0 lead, scoring a run in the third and adding two more in the fourth on an RBI double by Joe Polkowski (Norristown, PA/Norristown) and an RBI single by Knouse.

Romig etched his name in the Elizabethtown record books with one out in the bottom of the sixth, when he launched the ball to deep center and it bounced over the outfield fence for a ground rule double.

Delaware Valley added one more run in the top of the seventh as Swire scored.

Elizabethtown struck back with two out in the bottom of the eighth, when consecutive singles by Tim Downing (St. James, NY/Smithtown) and Romig put runners on the corners for Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst), who singled and drove in Downing. However, the Blue Jays could not preserve the momentum and came up short in the end.

Elizabethtown returns to action in the second round of the MAC playoffs Friday, May 5 at the Quakertown Memorial Park in Quakertown, PA. The Blue Jays will face Susquehanna at 11:00 a.m.

ETOWN SWEEPS WIDENER, CAPTURES MAC COMMONWEALTH CROWN AND NCAA TOURNAMENT BID

CHESTER, Pa. --- One month ago Elizabethtown had a record of 0-5 in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth and little hope of reaching any postseason play. Saturday, Etown completed its astonishing reversal of fortune by sweeping conference foe Widener on the road for its eighth and ninth consecutive conference victories, thereby clinching the MAC Commonwealth title, its first bid to the NCAA tournament since 1994, and home field advantage in the opening round of the MAC playoffs next week.

The Blue Jays defeated Widener 7-5 in 13 innings in the first game, and 6-2 in the second game to extend their overall record to 22-10 and their conference mark to 9-5.

Etown jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first inning of the opening game. Widener scored one run in the third and one run in the sixth to tie the game and send it into extra innings. The deadlock continued as Etown and Widener each scored one run in the ninth inning. The Blue Jays finally put away Widener by scoring two runs in the top of the 13th inning.

In the second game, Elizabethtown held the lead from the second inning on, scoring one run in the second and exploding for five in the fifth.

Ironman pitcher Derik Aasan (Cary, NC/Smithtown, NY) for the second Saturday in a row started both games of a doubleheader. He pitched the first six innings of the first game, allowing seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five. He also pitched the first six innings of the second game, getting his eighth win of the season and striking out four while giving up one earned run.

Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) took the mound for the Blue Jays in the seventh inning of the first game, and pitched seven innings to get the win. He struck out four, held Widener hitless for all seven innings pitched and gave up only one unearned run. Pittinger also pitched the seventh inning to close out the second game, allowing no baserunners in that inning.

Chris Turtell (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) drove in four of the Blue Jays' runs in the first game. Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) batted five for seven with a double, two runs and a steal in the first game and hit two for three with a run scored in the second. Jared Ness (McPherson, KS/McPherson) scored two runs and drove in two more in the second game while batting two for four with a triple.

Widener pitcher Bill Wright (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) pitched 11 innings in the first game, giving up three earned runs while striking out eight.

Elizabethtown returns to action on the road against Millersville Sunday, April 30 for the final game of the regular season. Etown will face Delaware Valley in the first round of the MAC playoffs at home Wednesday, May 3. Game time is to be announced.

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- At one point owning a 0-5 record in the Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth, Elizabethtown has vaulted itself back into the MAC playoff picture. The Blue Jays have now won five consecutive MAC Commonwealth games to reach the .500 mark in the conference. Etown swept conference power Juniata Saturday, winning 4-0 and 2-1 to improve to 17-9 overall and 5-5 in the MAC Commonwealth. Juniata falls to 19-9-2 overall and 5-5 in the conference.

Aasan blanked Juniata over six innings, allowing only two hits and one walk. He also threw only 53 pitches in six innings. Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll) pitched the seventh shutout inning.

DIVISION II MILLERSVILLE SQUEAKS PAST ETOWN, 7-6

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- Division II cross-county rival Millersville University pulled out a win in the ninth inning in Elizabethtown's home opener Monday, as the Marauders finished with a 7-6 victory. Elizabethtown is now 6-3 overall, while Millersville sees its record improve to 2-1.

Jamie Newton (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) started on the mound for the Blue Jays and stymied Millersville for much of the six innings he pitched, giving up only one run and four hits while striking out three and walking none. By the time the sixth inning was through, Elizabethtown had a 2-1 lead. Millersville tied the game in the seventh when doubled Mike Pestkie (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) and later scored on an Elizabethtown error.

The Marauders stormed ahead to a 6-2 lead in the top of the eighth when a single by Mike Wokulich (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove) was followed by a hit batter and a walk by pitcher Stephen Rutt (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) to load the bases. Matt Roberts (East Petersburg, PA) hit a base-clearing triple for Millersville and scored on a later single.
Elizabethtown came right back in the bottom of the eighth. Two walks leading off the inning were followed by a throwing error by Millersville shortstop Torrey Bomberger (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), an RBI single and a stolen base by the Blue Jays' Shawn Price (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), and an RBI double by Tyler Comp (Enola, PA/East) to drive home four runs and tie the score at six.

Bomberger led off the top of the ninth and was hit by a pitch by Elizabethtown's Bryan Pittinger (Westminster, MD/South Carroll). After being moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, Bomberger scored on a single from Wokulich. Elizabethtown's chance to tie the score was halted by a double play to end the ninth inning.

Elizabethtown returns to action at home against Ursinus Wednesday, March 15. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
