Back to top 3/6/2008 Etown closes spring trip with 6-3 win over Catholic ELIZABETHTOWN COLLEGE WOMEN'S TENNIS Elizabethtown Ends Spring Trip With 6-3 Win over Catholic HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team concluded its spring break trip with a 6-3 victory over the Catholic University of America on Thursday afternoon. The Blue Jays (7-2 overall) split three singles matches with the Cardinals (1-4 overall), but swept all three doubles matches to earn the victory. Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) improved to 12-2 on the season and 47-15 in her career with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Corinne Alcorn at third singles, her 11th consecutive victory in singles dating back to last fall. Also picking up singles wins were first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands), who downed Caitlin Dunn 7-5, 6-3 at fourth singles, and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt), who swept Julia Cotrone 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. The doubles wins came from senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) and Yu over Rachel Tenuta and Emily McGlynn by an 8-3 score at flight one, while sophomores Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) defeated Alcorn and Dunn 8-2 at flight two, and Albers and Fisher downed Mary Wargo and Cotrone 8-3 at flight three. The Blue Jays improved to 6-2 overall with the win while the Thunder dropped to 2-1 with the loss. Singles victories for the Blue Jays came from senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown), who defeated Amanda Steiner 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 (tiebreaker) at second singles, along with junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) who breezed past Stephanie Steiner 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. At fourth singles, first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) won 6-0, 6-1 over Kara Kauffman, sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) claimed a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Dana Dunham at fifth singles, and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) whitewashed Jennifer Wall 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. The teams were tied 4-4 when rain washed out play at fourth singles, and Meredith's Amanda Bitler finished off action with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 win over Elizabethtown first-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands). Junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) was the lone singles winner for the Blue Jays, picking up a 6-0, 6-7 (8-6), 10-7 tiebreaker victory over Kathryn Maples at third singles. The Avenging Angels (5-2 overall) won five singles matches, including three via the 10-point tiebreaker in place of a third set, while also winning three sets via conventional tiebreaker. In doubles, the Blue Jays (5-2 overall) swept all three flights, as Yu teamed with senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) for an 8-4 win over Maples and Sydney Williford at flight one, sophomores Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) and Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) edged Meredith Roberson and Morgan Martin 9-8 (7-2) at flight two, and Albers teamed with first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) for an 8-6 win over Bitler and Caitlin Dillon at flight three. The Blue Jays (5-1 overall) won all six singles matches in straight sets over the Hornets (0-2 overall). At first singles, sophomore Emily Swarr (Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) defeated Elizabeth Eckert 6-1, 6-2, while senior Emma Smith (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at second singles over Jessica Moore and junior Alice Yu (Athens, GA/Clarke Central) won 6-0, 6-0 at third singles over Krysten Bishop. First-year student Minke Albers (The Hague, The Netherlands) defeated Amanda Dennis 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles, sophomore Jessica Russell (Kennett Square, PA/Unionville) downed Bridney Tune 6-1, 6-3 at fifth singles and first-year student Kelly Fisher (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) won at sixth singles by a 6-0, 6-0 score over Rachel Moore. In doubles, Smith and Yu blanked Eckert and Bishop 8-0 at flight one, Swarr and Russell defeated Jessica Moore and Dennis 8-3 at flight two, and Albers and Fisher teamed for an 8-1 win over Tune and Rachel Moore at flight three.
