Since being reactivated as a varsity sport in 1988 following a 10-year absence, the Eliza-bethtown College golf team has enjoyed consistent success. The last few seasons the program has been on an upswing. Three times since 2008, the Blue Jays have reigned as champions of the Commonwealth Conference.

The Jays’ success started immediately following the program’s rebirth, as Greg Millen ’88 fnished second in the MAC and 25th at the NCAA Division III championships in 1988. In 1995, the Blue Jays claimed their frst individual MAC champion as Ben Smith ’98 won the conference crown. Finally, in 2008, Elizabethtown took its frst Commonwealth Conference team championship and qualifed for the NCAA Division III Championships for the frst time. The Jays repeated the feat in 2009 and accomplished it for a third time in 2011.

In 2010, Elizabethtown College hosted the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships at the Her-shey Country Club East Course and the Hershey Links. The courses, which play host to regular-sea-son tournaments in the fall and spring for the Blue Jays, received rave reviews from all involved. In fact, the 2011 Commonwealth Championship, won by Elizabethtown, came on the East Course. By taking the conference title, the Blue Jays returned to the NCAA Division III Championships, this time fnishing 35th in Greensboro, N.C.

“The biggest beneft of being a student-athlete is being able to represent your school at the collegiate level. You get to build lasting friendships and compete on a much more competitive stage. Also, as an upperclassman the younger guys look up to you so you get to be a role model and show them the ropes.”
