Promising Practices: Understanding Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGIE)
Workshop by Olajiwon K. McCadney, Director for Diversity & Inclusive Excellence Education at Nazareth College
This workshop will provide understanding towards supporting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer/questioning, and diverse gender identities/sexualities community. The workshop is designed to introduce concepts, terminology, and resources related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. There is a short intermission about halfway through. Additionally, participants will develop a deeper awareness of personal ideas, stereotypes, and assumptions related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual (LGBTIQA) individuals.

Vera Metcalf, a Yupik Eskimo, executive director of the Eskimo Walrus Commission since 2002, a member of the executive committee of the Inuit Circumpolar Council, commissioner on the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, a member of the advisory panel of the North Pacific Research Board, a member of the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy, and an advisor on Native affairs for the Marine Mammal Commission. Metcalf has been inducted into the Alaska Women’s Hall of Fame, an organization honoring Alaskan women who have made a significant contribution influencing the culture of Alaska.

In this discussion, we’ll listen to an episode of the Science of Happiness podcast – created by the Greater Good Science Center based at UC Berkeley – featuring Comedian W. Kamau Bell and his experience building common ground with his in-laws. Afterwards, we’ll try out the techniques featured in the podcast ourselves! Notebooks and pens will be provided.

PA State Police Major Kristal Turner-Childs: Leadership
Major Turner-Childs enlisted in the state police in 1998 and was promoted to corporal in 2005, sergeant in 2007, lieutenant in 2010, and captain in 2015. She is the first African-American woman in the history of the Pennsylvania State Police to command a troop, and the second African American woman to obtain the rank of major. Major Turner-Childs earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Elizabethtown College and a master’s degree in in organizational leadership from Central Penn college. She is also a graduate of the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command and the FBI National Academy. Read more about Major Turner-Childs here.

The conference was developed as a way to promote unity among students and faculty of color and to provide opportunities for the community to learn about the multicultural experience.
