High School Math Contest

Elizabethtown College’s Department of Mathematical Sciences, in partnership with the student-led Math Club, invites local high school students to the second annual High School Math Contest. This annual event will feature a variety of engaging activities, including escape rooms and math-themed puzzles, facilitated by Etown students and faculty.

About the Competition

Competing teams will showcase their math skills, with awards for top-scoring individuals and schools. Along with the competition, students will have the chance to tour campus, enjoy lunch at the Marketplace Dining Hall, and connect with Etown's Admissions Counselors. The members of the Etown Math Club, fellow students, and faculty hope to inspire participants to discover mathematical artistry and to participate in a day of fun with fellow math-lovers!

Contest Format & Scoring

Contest Format

  1. There will be one 90-minute section of the contest to be completed individually.
  2. There will be thirty (30) short-response questions.
  3. There will be one question (#30) where work must be shown in order to break a tie. This work will not be counted unless there is a tie.
  4. There will be no permitted use of calculators.
  5. Each question will be worth 1 point.
  6. Incorrect answers will only be used in the event of a tie.

Scoring & Determination of Winners

  1. Each participant will be given a score out of thirty (30) where each correct response is one point.
  2. No partial credit will be granted.
  3. Each team's score, out of one hundred and twenty (120), will be calculated by summing the individual scores of the four (4) team participants. If a team has less than four (4) members, then the team score will be the sum of the participating students. This may lead to a disadvantage, so it is advisable to have alternates for this contest.
  4. Individual ties will be resolved in the following order:
    • Least Number of Incorrect Answers
    • Highest Points from Question 30
  5. Team ties will be resolved in the following order:
    • Cumulative least number of incorrect answers
    • Cumulative highest points from Question 30
  6. If the first two tiebreakers are insufficient, a predetermined order of undisclosed questions will be employed based on level of difficulty. For example, Question X is the first one on the list. Participant 1 correctly answers Question X and Participant 2 does not. Participant 1 would win the tiebreaker. For teams, it is the same but cumulative.
  7. All final determinations will be made by the Elizabethtown College Director of the Mathematical Sciences Program.
