Off-Campus & Commuter Information

These processes are not for incoming students. Incoming students can work through their application process to notify us of their housing status.

There are different types of commuter students here at Etown. Students who live within a 30-mile or 30-minute radius from campus and with family are called true commuters. We have SGPS and part-time students who also are considered true commuters. Then we have students for a few different reasons who may pay to break the housing agreement or have a medical or financial exemption to live off-campus on their own. Regardless of the type of commuter you are, we are here to help ensure you are connected to the campus to the best of our ability.

We encourage students to discuss this option with their families as soon as possible. There may be implications to your financial aid offer by changing your housing status from residential to commuter. If you are seeking to be released from your housing contract, that is you have a need to live off-campus and not at your permanent address with family, please see the Contract Release information below. To change your housing status to commuter, please email Residence Life.

Students who are currently commuting and would like to change their housing status to residential are welcome to do so. There may be implications to your financial aid offer by changing your housing status from commuter to residential. Please connect with a Financial Aid Counselor before making this request. Then contact Residence Life for next steps to change your housing status. This request can be made at any time.

Etown is a residential college, meaning students are required to live on campus for four years, or eight semesters from matriculation. Students who wish to live off campus may do so but are still responsible for housing contract payments. Specifically, if a student chooses to live off campus, they are required to pay the double room rate for each remaining semester of their eight-semester housing contract. However, there are exceptions to this policy. Students experiencing significant health or financial changes may apply to be released from the breakage fee. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee approval. To request a release without paying the buy-out fee, students should take the following steps:

  • Contact Financial Aid to determine whether changes in your financial situation might impact your aid package.

If your circumstances warrant a change, Financial Aid will notify the Office of Residence Life, and you may be invited to apply for a Contract Release for the upcoming academic year. If you have a disability that requires a housing accommodation, please connect with Disability Services. If we are unable to provide a reasonable, disability-related housing modification on campus, we will work with you to explore alternative housing solutions.

Apply to Be a Student Leader

Interested in making a difference on campus? Apply to be a Resident Assistant (RA) or Community Assistant (CA) at Elizabethtown College! Living on campus offers students the opportunity to grow, connect, and be part of a vibrant community, and RAs and CAs play a key role in creating that experience. These student leaders foster belonging, build connections, and inspire meaningful learning among their peers.

Community Assistants (CAs) are returning leaders who have previously served as RAs for at least one year and are ready to take their impact to the next level.

-- Applications for the next academic year will open in November and close in January --

On-Campus Residences

Our residence halls offer a variety of room styles, from singles and doubles to triples and suites. Each space is designed for comfort, community, and a vibrant college experience. You'll find shared lounges, kitchens, laundry facilities, and fully furnished rooms that make it easy to feel at home while staying connected to campus life.

Additional Residential Options

Juniors and senior students are eligible for three additional residence options, the Schreiber Quadrangle (Quads), Hackman Apartments, and Campus Houses, which offer greater independence while staying rooted in the Etown community. These Independent Living Units (ILUs) feature private kitchens, in-unit bathrooms, and furnished common areas (except living rooms in houses).

Washers and dryers are provided in all residential facilities by Caldwell & Gregory. Laundry is included in tuition for Elizabethtown College residential students during the academic year. Each building will be equipped with at least one ADA-accessible washer and dryer.

Students have access to the laundry monitoring app "Speed Queen". This app provides you with real-time notifications on when machines are available, how much time is left on your cycle, and a notification when your cycle is finished. Download the Speed Queen app from your mobile app store, create an account, add your location using the pin ETOWN1, and locate your building laundry room to get started.

If a machine needs service scan the QR code on the machine. The QR code on each machine allows you to submit a service request quickly and easily.

**Important:  Washers only use High Efficiency (HE) laundry detergent.**

If something in your room or residence hall needs to be fixed, like a broken light, plumbing issue, or heating problem, please submit a work order.

For full instructions on submitting a work order, including how to report emergencies, desktop and mobile steps, and how to check your request status, visit the Facilities Work Order page.

Emergency Maintenance: For urgent issues that pose a health or safety risk, such as no heat or a water leak, call Campus Safety immediately at 717-361-1000.

All selection details for the upcoming academic year are sent to your Etown email.

  • ILUs must be fully filled at the date the application is dueincomplete units will not be accepted.
  • Sizes vary: Hackman Apartments and Quads (4 beds), Brinser Suites (3–4 beds), and College-Owned Houses (4–5 beds).
  • If a group member drops out, you may replace them with an eligible student, be assigned someone from the waitlist or a new transfer student. If unable to fill the unit your group may be moved to a traditional hall in order the ILU unit to be filled by a group on the waitlist.

Only students with approved medical accommodations through the Office of Disability Services may be considered for a single. The waitlist is also managed by that office.

Let your roommates know now. If no one is lined up to take your place, we will fill the space over winter break.

  • On-campus housing is not guaranteed.
  • Placements may be made if space is available after incoming students are housed—usually not confirmed until August.
  • Graduate/5th-year students cannot choose roommates and are placed where space is available in traditional housing.

Checking In / Moving In

For some buildings, there are more requests than open spaces. After housing selection waitlists are available for returning students if they would like to be considered for another building. We maintain waitlists throughout the summer and email students with an offer for their preferred building when able.

Over the summer some students decide not to return for a variety of reasons. When this happens, we need to utilize as many open beds as possible and that means going through our waitlist and then assigning transfer students.

It is normal for conflict to arise between roommates and people who live together. Our first step when a conflict or disagreement arises is mediation. If mediation fails than a student can contact their Area Coordinator to discuss next steps. If a student knows someone who has an available space that they want to live with they can make the request to reslife@etown.edu. Students must receive approval from Residence Life before moving rooms. Room changes are not conducted during the first or last two weeks of each semester.

To request an early arrival, you'll need to fill out the early arrival request form prior to August 34 for fall semester arrival. If you request after this deadline you will be charged a $50 administrative fee. You will receive approval by email. If you arrive early on a date you were not approved for you will be charged $50 per day before your arrival date.

If your early arrival date is a move-in day for new students you will come through check-in at Leffler Chapel during the check-in times. If you are arriving outside of those dates, you will go to Campus Security (located on South Mt. Joy Street) to check in and receive your key.

If you have more than one roommate listed you are either in a triple or an independent living unit (ILU) such as an apartment or quad.

This means your roommate group was not completed. Either someone declined to join, or the group leader did not accept a request to join.

No. We are not offering students a contract release at this time.

You may hear this information before we do. If your roommate shares that they won’t be attending, please encourage them to contact us directly. Without hearing from them, we can’t begin the process of assigning you a new roommate. Once we’re notified, we’ll work to place you with another student.
