Math Placement
Elizabethtown College's Mathematical Sciences programs operate under a Math Placement Policy for enrolled students. Some students may be auto-placed into math courses using available student data, while others will take the ALEKS® Math Placement Assessment to ensure they start in the right course for their background and goals.

The faculty choose top students to serve as tutors in Mathematical Sciences. Drop-in tutoring is offered five nights a week for students taking most 100- or 200-level math classes. Tutoring is beneficial for both those being tutored, as well as the tutors themselves, by reinforcing course material and teaching them how to exercise care and patience when explaining complicated ideas to others. Such skills can translate directly to personal or professional goals.

All majors are encouraged to consider a study abroad experience during their time at Etown. Whether for a semester or a May term, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture and see the world beyond campus. Math students at Etown are involved in numerous activities, both on and off campus. It is quite common to see small groups of students studying together in the Math Commons area or the "Math Hideaway," a dedicated student study room. Faculty office doors are always open for questions and conversation.
The Math Club provides a forum to exchange ideas and information in mathematics, sponsors speakers, encourages field trips, and investigates current research and employment opportunities.

From paid internships at organizations like Google, Lockheed Martin, and Geisinger to Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) at top universities, math students at Etown gain real-world and research experience that sets them apart. On-campus faculty research opportunities are also available to all qualified students, regardless of major.
There are numerous opportunities for paid internships and experiential learning. Our students also participate in Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) at various universities — doing research with faculty while earning a stipend and living expenses. On-campus research projects allow students to explore topics of interest more deeply while developing skills in finding answers to new questions. Research and internship opportunities are available to all qualified math students, regardless of major.
