Themed & Zone Housing Communities
Elizabethtown College offers several themed housing options and zone housing options in our residential communities.
By choosing a themed housing option, you have the opportunity to live in a residential community where you can easily connect with neighbors who have shared interests, experiences, or academic pursuits. Themed housing options may be available as a section of a floor, a full floor, or multiple floors, and typically include theme-specific activities and discussions.
By choosing a zone housing option, you have the opportunity to live in a residential environment with students who prioritize similar goals or housing arrangements. Zone housing is typically available by floor and generally does not include zone-specific programming.

Themed Housing Descriptions
Business blocks: First-year business students have the opportunity to live in a Business Block in Founders Residence Hall. Business Blocks are clusters of 8-16 students who live on the same floor and intend to pursue a major in the Business Department. All students who live in Business Blocks have access to residential tutoring services and have the opportunity to exchange ideas and collaborate on projects.
Honors: Honors themed housing provides countless opportunities for current Honors Program participants to engage in collaborative study, dynamic conversation, and honors-specific events. Honors themed housing is located in Schlosser Hall.
Momentum: This themed housing community in Schlosser residence hall is available for all first-year students in the Momentum program. Momentum students take an interdisciplinary approach to their studies, exploring the depth and breadth of our liberal arts curriculum. They embrace a global perspective incorporating study abroad and international service into their college experience. Momentum students assume leadership roles on campus and in the local community with a focus on equity, inclusive excellence, and multiculturalism. Momentum students mentor each other and are mentored by Momentum alumni.
Partners in Engineering (PiE): As a member of a PiE slice, you will live on a floor with a group of students who have academic goals and interests related to engineering or physics. Living in a PiE slice is a great opportunity to collaborate on projects, assignments, and ideas with other engineering or physics students, and it provides you with access to residential tutoring as needed. Each PiE slice is available for up to 8 first-year students in Founders residence hall. PiE slices are also available in Schlosser residence hall for engineering students who are also members of the Honors program.
SDLCs 1.0: The Student Directed Learning Community (SDLC) 1.0 program is a gender-inclusive community in Myer residence hall that is focused on service learning. Throughout the year, SDLC 1.0 teams have the opportunity to work with 4 local agencies to get a better understanding of community needs and how they can be met. More information is available here.
SDLCs 2.0 & 3.0: Each year, 40-50 juniors and seniors commit to meaningful and partnership-driven community engagement through the SDLC 2.0 & 3.0 programs. SDLC 2.0 & 3.0 teams live in gender-inclusive houses on campus and typically have four members. More information is available here.
Stonewall: Stonewall is a gender-inclusive housing option available for any student who identifies as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. By choosing the Stonewall community, you are stepping into a supportive and inclusive residential experience that features opportunities for discussion, leadership, and engagement. The Stonewall themed housing community is located in Founders residence hall and partners closely with the Mosaic House.
Zone Housing Descriptions
Gender inclusive housing: All students who choose this housing option can choose to live with a roommate without consideration of gender identity. The gender inclusive zone housing option is on a floor in Founders residence hall, and bathrooms on this floor are gender-inclusive as well. Other gender-inclusive spaces on campus include the Stonewall themed housing community, Myer residence hall, SDLCs, and ILUs.
Substance-free housing: All students who choose this housing option make a commitment to not use or possess alcohol or other drugs while on the floor, regardless of their age or academic year. Depending on the interest of residents, additional programming may be offered that focuses on healthy living and substance-free social activities. This community primarily houses upper division students, though it is open to first-year students when spaces are available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join a themed housing community or zone housing option? It’s easy! If you are an upper division student, you will receive the chance to join the multi-cohort communities each spring. Themed & Zone Housing Request forms for upper division students will be available on the housing selection page in mid-February, and SDLC applications are available on the SDLC page. If you are an incoming first-year student, you can select a themed community or zone housing option when you complete your Housing Profile Survey over the summer. Students who have been accepted into the Honors or Momentum programs will be automatically placed in themed housing (with the option of opting out), but should still select this option when completing their Survey.
DO I have to be enrolled in a specific course or program to join a themed housing community? Most themed communities do not require enrollment in a specific course or program. The exceptions are business blocks, PiE slices, Momentum housing, and Honors housing. These communities are limited to students who are enrolled in certain courses or programs,
Can I select a roommate who is not a part of the themed community? In all themed communities, both roommates must select that community and select each other as roommates. If you are selecting to live in a business block, PiE slice, Momentum housing, or Honors housing, your roommate must be enrolled in those courses or programs as well. Once all students are placed who meet these criteria, there may be additional space remaining. If this is the case, Community Living will invite students who are interested in the community, but who are not enrolled in the relevant course or program, to select this community as well.
Who do I contact with questions? The themed & zone housing program is a part of the Live Etown experience that is managed by the Office of Community Living (reslife@etown.edu). Many themed housing communities also have a faculty or staff partner who helps to develop the theme and share theme-specific resources and support for student members.
